The First Attempt
a drawing show juried by Lauren O'Neal

Opening reception & gallery talk: Saturday, November 9, 2002, 2-5pm

artSPACE@16 has invited Lauren O'Neal to jury its 13th art event, The First Attempt Drawing Show. Lauren O'Neal, an active exhibiting artist who has worked for over a decade in the areas of arts administration and education, most recently as the executive director of the Arlington Center for the Arts. She has curated numerous exhibits and art events, including the PERSONA show at the Somerville Museum, and was a co-founder of the Windows Art Project in Somerville.

The jurying process for this Drawing show is done from actual work. Juror O'Neal states, "I'm open to very different types of drawing and interpretations of the idea of drawing. For example, embroidery could be drawing, a wire sculpture could be drawing, a traditional pencil portrait could be drawing... It is exciting to see a wide range of submissions, traditional and non-traditional approaches to drawing."

"For "The First Attempt", O'Neal says, "I focused on work that had something to do with the passage of time in a process sense. A mark that looked like it was still being formed. A line that seemed to jump off the page and into 3D space. A narrative that was unfolding. A dialogue." She continues, "I also wanted to feature work in more traditional drawing media, as well as work that expanded our concept of what a drawing could be. Fiber, wire, collage and other materials have all lent themselves to the process and results of drawing, and ultimately, no matter what the material, drawing speaks to a uniquely human desire to make our mark on the world."
