Amy Morrison - mixed media paintings and sculpture installation

Amy Morrison's latest work explores the concepts of microscopic and macroscopic. Her thoughts and ideas for this series are informed by the world of biology as well as from her work as a psychotherapist. Amy enjoys the process of taking a larger experience, separating it into smaller fragments and then, in the hope of providing a fresh perspective, transforming it into something new. Through the medium of encaustic and mixed media Amy hopes to share her fascination with this process.
Amy Morrison lives and creates artwork in Malden, MA. She studied art and psychology at Bowling Green State University in Ohio and graduated in 1996 with a BS in Art Therapy. In 2001 Amy graduated from Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts with a Masters in Expressive Therapy, which is an inter-modal arts approach to psychotherapy. She currently works in the North Shore area as an Expressive Therapist and is adjunct faculty at Lesley University.

Thomas Schorn - mixed media paintings

Thomas Schorn's most recent body of work is a study of minimal landscapes. They are inspired by the places where he vacations and spends his leisure. He feels most comfortable in open spaces like the desert, the ocean, and the mountains. His art making process is prolific and he often works on five to ten pieces at once. Thomas employs a mixed media and there are often layers of collage and acrylic beneath the final coat of oil paint. His primary objective is to create visually balanced fields of color. Though his work offers quiet and desolation, they are rather inviting and somehow soothing.
Thomas Schorn has been living and creating artwork in Malden, MA for the past five years. He graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY in 1995 with a bachelors degree in Fine Art Photography and he currently works for Eastman Kodak, Inc. as a Quality Assurance Engineer.

Local Artists Are Getting A Chance to Shine
In New Exhibit in the City Of Malden.

At artSPACE@16, located at 16 Princeton Road, two local artists have their work on display starting August 30 through September 27. A potluck reception was held for the artists on Saturday September 6th. Thomas Schorn, a mixed-media painter, focuses on broad, spare landscapes. Amy Morrison works in several media, including painting, sculpture, and installation art.

"The theme of my new work is about looking at things from a microscopic view and a macroscopic view," Morrison said. "I have eight encaustic paintings, which are made with a wax-based paint. I also have some sculptures. I have an installation piece called 'Observe and Record,' which invites audience participation. It allows the audience to take a set of lenses into the world, and report back on what they saw."

Amy Morrison, a Rutland Street resident, is pleased to be displaying in a local setting.

"I'm very excited," Morrison, who is currently works in the North Shore area as an Expressive Therapist and is adjunct faculty at Lesley University said. "I've been to a lot of the shows that Sand T has put together. It feels really good to be supported in this town. With artSPACE@16, it's a venue where we can exhibit our art and be supported, and I'm meeting a lot of artists I didn't even know were out there."

artSPACE@16 has been open for four summers, and Sand T, the director of artSPACE@16 is pleased with the participation from local artists and viewers alike. She said, " As one of the grassroots entities helping to shape a vibrant artists' community in Malden, we seek to strengthen the role of the arts in the community and provide support among fellow artists through ongoing art events and exhibition opportunities. It's wonderful to be part of the art movement, having artists be a more visible and active population, and to give people a place to see art. There are a lot of plans and ideas in shaping an artists community in Malden. It's an exciting moment in Malden."

Tom Schorn said, “The type of work that I produce continually changes. My most recent body of work is a study of minimal landscapes. Large sweeping fields. Long straight roads. Wide stretching beaches. Stark deserts. I feel most comfortable in open spaces; they are the places I choose for vacation. There is a certain quiet emptiness that comforts me. I can see everything at once, the visual elements are balanced, and I can absorb it more smoothly.”

Schorn has been living and creating artwork in Malden, MA for the past five years. He graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY in 1995 with a bachelor’s degree in Fine Art Photography and he currently works for Eastman Kodak, Inc. as a Quality Assurance Engineer.

Schorn said, “ My art making process is prolific and I often work on five to ten pieces at once.” Thomas employs a mixed media and there are often layers of collage and acrylic beneath the final coat of oil paint. My primary objective is to create visually balanced fields of color.”

Schron’s work offers quiet and desolation, they are rather inviting and somehow soothing.

"The Locals, is a new exhibition program for artSPACE@16," Sand T said. "I wanted to create a show each year featuring the latest work created by artists who live or work in Malden. The second show for “The Locals” series will be held in March-April. For this first exhibition of “The Locals” series, I divided the space to make essentially two solo shows, so that the artists can exhibit a number of pieces. I know these talented artists have great work, and I wanted to give them a place to show it."

Sand T continued, “The Locals is one of our exhibition program to benefit all the residents of Malden through seeing and learning about contemporary art in relaxed local setting ... "We're right here in the community."

Exhibition is on display through September 27, 2003. The remaining viewing hours is on these Saturdays: 9/13, and 9/27, from 12-5pm.
